Sightseeing attractions in Port Glasgow

Scotland, United Kingdom

Port Glasgow, a port town on the west coast of Scotland, offers visitors a range of attractions that reflect the rich history and maritime tradition of the region.

Newark Castle

This castle, built in 1484, is situated on the banks of the River Clyde. It was inhabited by the Maxwell family and later became an important center for shipbuilding. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved buildings and surrounding gardens, providing insight into the history of the region.

Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow Sculpture

Located in Coronation Park is an impressive sculpture dedicated to the shipbuilders of Port Glasgow. The 10-meter tall stainless steel structure depicts two larger-than-life shipyard workers shaping steel plates with sledgehammers to form the hull of a ship. This sculpture honors the heritage of the shipbuilding industry in the town.

Coronation Park

Opened in 1937 to celebrate the coronation of King George VI, Coronation Park houses a memorial to the victims of the 1947 Clyde ship disaster, in which 20 people lost their lives when a pleasure steamer capsized in bad weather. The park also offers a beautiful view of the river and surrounding area.

These attractions provide a deep insight into the maritime history and cultural heritage of Port Glasgow and are a must-see for any visitor to the city.
